Stephan’s An Idiot
Posted on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 in Asides
Hi, my name is Stephan and I am an idiot.
Must watch: Star Wars retold by someone who never saw Star Wars.
Guess those smug Mac commercials worked too well. IN YR APPLEZ, STEALIN' A;LL YR DATAZ!1!
My new favorite commercial. I love the casual creepiness.

Whoa! The cops are idiots. This story is BS. I’ve heard of this story a number of times before, and I have a hard time taking the cops version over his. In fact I expect the cops are straight up lying. Check out his story on his blog(read the overview section): http://greencycles.blogspot.com/
I don’t understand why the strib is parroting the cops story and not even including his… not sure why Czech is either.

Bicycles don’t belong on freeways — and any idiot would realize he is in extreme danger on the road that leads out of the airport. Take the lightrail to the VA or 50th Street stops and ride from there…
Hence he is an idiot.
Oh, and when a cop, who was just in my face tells me to walk my bike, I am going to do it. That was a miscalculation on his part, there were no witnesses around.
Stephan didn’t deserve to be treated the way he was, but the idiot has to realize he was provoking the cops — and he paid the price. If you are going to act like that, you better be prepared to take the consequences. Some cops are gorillas.

Civil disobedience does not an idiot make… this is how laws are changed.

Dude, this is stupidity not civil disobedience. Bicycle riders are not oppressed.

Anybody who is threatened by Cops then thrown to the ground and beat is oppressed. This is about abuse of power (or as you called them: gorillas). There was no indication of bikes being forbidden and the cops were going to make him walk his bike into oncoming traffic. When he refused they beat him down… Stupid would have been letting them get away with their posturing and justified their “gorillaness” hopefully after the appeals are over these cops will think twice about threatening, making stupid requests that are less legal than the act they were busting and finally beating someone for turning their back on them.

Yes, but riding a bike and acting like an ass in front of the cops when they gave you an order doesn’t mean you are being civilly disobedient.
There are bad cops out there. I treat every cop like a bad cop until they prove otherwise.
Stephan learned a hard lesson about reality and he is still an idiot. I am not saying the cops are innocent in this, but neither is Stephan and he is trying to play it off like he is.

“riding a bike and acting like an ass in front of the cops when they gave you an order doesn’t mean you are being civilly disobedient.”
That’s exactly what civil disobedience is.

Well, don’t complain when you get beat down, OK? Don’t act like a martyr when you are riding a fold-up bicycle on a road that any idiot should realize is not meant for bicycle traffic. It is a major metropolitan airport — common sense dictates it is not a good place to ride a bike. Take your bike to a cab, pay three bucks and get to a place that is safe to ride your bike.
Guess what, there isn’t a sign outside my house saying I can’t take my shotgun and shoot at the rabbits munching in my garden, but I don’t do it. Why? Common sense. Does Stephan need a sign to tell him everything he can and can’t do?
This was a predictable outcome to any fly on the wall watching the situation. The cop warned him he would be maced or tased (according to Stephan). Like Principal Bender said in “The Breakfast Club”: You mess with the bull, you get the horns.
Oh, and it is not a “Criminal Court Victory” as his blog entry reads. He was still convicted of a crime.

Just because an authority figure can hurt you doesn’t mean your an idiot for standing up to them and provoking them. At least that’s the point I’m trying to get across.
When your holed up in a school and Voldemort demands you turn over Potter or people are going to get hurt or killed, turning over Potter isn’t the best option. If everyone stood up to idiotic cops, cops would change. The problem is not Stephen, the problems is the methods employed by the cops.

C’mon, man. The cop said “Just this once” and gave Stephan the perfect out. But the guy couldn’t let it go, he had to be an ass to a a cop that clearly was out of his mind.
Don’t elevate this to protesting a war, or protesting racism. This is not even close to that and to try to is being guilty of hyperbole.

OK, I give. That’s a good point, but his pushing the issue further doesn’t give the cops the right to violence which should only be used if they’re threatened (and perhaps not even then).
Because this incident has gotten so much attention, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the impetuous for a bike lane. Which would justify his behavior.

Fuck a bike lane to the airport. Only an asshole takes a collapsible bike to go on a trip. If we have to spend $10 million dollars to construct a bike lane for the airport, I will throw down thumbtacks every time I drive by.
