Where are the Wii games?

Posted on Monday, December 18, 2006 in Contextual Theatre, Halo 3, Video Games, Wii

nintendo_wii_illus2.jpgGoing into the wii launch I was really excited about what appeared to be a great launch line-up. Wii Sports, Zelda, Monkey Ball, Rayman… and I thought there were a lot more… but it’s a month in and there aren’t. Elebits is on it’s way but one ain’t enough.

Perhaps I’m mouthing a look horse in the gift but at the 250$ price point I think Ninty could be selling a lot more games right now. Sure other consoles rarely launch with more than two good games and there can be an argument made that the Wii has at least 4. But the experience with the wii-mote is so fresh that I have this need to try more new games with it. It feels like when I first got my PS1 with the dual shock, I couldn’t stop playing every game that existed for it (granted that was well after launch but it was a compulsion none-the-less).

  • 1) I want Metroid on-line!
  • 2) I want Pokemon on-line!
  • 3) I want the web browser now (where the hell is that?)!
  • 4) I want the News and Weather channels now!
  • 5) I want resident evil (Come-on Capcom! Re-release Code Veronica again another time, or move the Survivor light-gun games over to the Wii!)!!
  • 5) Wario-Ware should have been a launch game!
  • 6) F-Zero, dude, F-Zero!
  • 7) I keep asking for Soul Caliber and no one keeps making it!
  • 8) Wii Play seems to be available everywhere in the world but here!
  • 9) I think wii can all agree that there should be a Mario Fishing game!
  • 10) Halo 3… er… Halo Wii (This is unlikely… Maybe Marathon instead)!
  • 11) And what about Katamari Dama… s… Wii?!
    1. Patience, young grasshopper.

PS3 owners are saying the same thing.

    2. Have you beat any of the launch titles yet? I sure as hell haven’t.

The web browser is supposed to come out before Christmas, I think. It might be on Christmas, as the online stuff is updated on Mondays in the US.

I’m tempted to figure out how to make a Flash game that works with the browser. I know Flash really well, but have never used it for interactive purposes - just animation.

    3. PS3 owners can’t afford a game. If they can resistance is the only good one… although the online multi player would give it some long legs.

    4. We happen to have a flash programmer among our ranks now… Hello Jackal? Wii want 8&5 the game!

    5. Haven’t beat any launch games yet. Almost beat call of duty and I think Sojo is over half through zelda. I beat trauma center on the DS and after playing about 5 levels on the wii I needed to go no further. Over 1/2 through monkeyball (but that robot dinosaur boss is kicking my ass). Just started playing Rayman and it kicks a lot of ass, but I’m ready to move past mini-games and get into some real juice.

    6. Dude, I want to be in the game! Make me a beer guzzling boss or something…like you have to pour enough keg beer to get me to pass out or I will sit on you and end the level.

    7. I’m on the 4th temple in Zelda, and pretty far on Rayman (the drumming games are incredibly addictive - it’s fun to try to outscore each other).

In my infinite lameness, I’m also working up to Pro status in Wii Sports… but none of this matters, as I lost my damn fool mind and played World of Warcraft all weekend.

    8. Alright, somebody concept a solid game and I’ll develop it.

Realize that I can’t be sure if I’m going to be able to listen for specific buttons, so it will probably need to be a point and click type of game.

Justin handles all the character animation, that gets too tedious for me.

Maybe we can work on a stripped down Toe Jame and Earl version where the characters are named 8 and 5.

I want more virtual console games. Now.
      for Genesis:
      Toe Jam and Earl
      Road Rash
      for SNES:
      Street Fighter
      Mario Kart
      for NES:
      Wizardry
      Goonies II
      for Turbo Grafix:
      Chase HQ
      Every Bonk Game

I could go on and on, but I’m 20 hours into Zelda, and I’ve just gotten to escorting the Oregon Trail Stage Coach through a horde of Goblins. I’m not really upset that I don’t have enough choices yet.

I sent a few Mii’s your Way last night Oscar.

    9. Toejam and Earl next week! I really want Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker, too.

Let’s get on that game. We could call it ‘Click Here To See If You’ve Won!’

    10. I’ve got a name for it: Hide the Wii-Mote

    11. I just found out that Metroid won’t be around until closer to xmas next year… Wii need a good FPS sooner than that… Marathon? Maybe a flash version.

    12. I think Line Rider could make for a fun, flash-based Wii game.

    13. How about a flag semaphore game where you have to signal ship to ship in order to save the fleet?

    14. I want to play a game called “TV Limbo” in which you perilously jump from channel to channel on a Wednesday afternoon with one goal in mind- going through every extended basic cable channel available without crossing paths with Julia Roberts or Paris Hilton (the Wiimote serves as a cattleprod; The nunchuk? A tiny purse w/ a chihuahua and/or brick inside). Scary, huh? Seriously, this sh*t would make ‘Silent Hill’ look like Marble Madness’. Here, I’ll even write chapter one of the Brady Games guide right here:

Channels to avoid lest you run across your two nemises (nemisises?) and face certain doom-

E!, MTV, FOX, NBC, HBO, CNN, Lifetime, TNT, Comedy Central, CNN, LOGO, MSNBC, ABC,- wait. Ah, screw it. SPOILER ALERT: the only safe places are the Outdoor Channel, History Channel, and C-Span; and if either one of these chicks writes a book (Ha!), you might wanna nix C-Span, as well.

      B-rad.

6700 more Xbox Live points to go until the Baby Suri Avatar is mine!

    15. i had an idea for a 8and5 game. i was thinking something similar to kings quest in gameplan with a sort of alice in wonderland feeling adventure. the in game characters would all be 8and5ers and they could write their own dialogue for the game, asking riddles or doling out quests or something.

    16. i had an idea for an 8and5 game. it could be a kings quest style as far as gameplay. it could be set in some crazy world with an alice in wonderland type feel and adventure. all the characters in game would obviously be 8and5ers. then u could hash out a storyline and have the 8and5ers write their dialogur for their characters.

    17. Do you have something against Paris Hilton? She could really use our support now as she helps Britney work through her divorce.

And I don’t understand why you don’t want to see Julia. Her smile is so special.

I had made the Suri mii already but I was visited by some scientologists looking a lot like Jehovah’s witnesses who demanded I erase it or pay 8 million dollars.

      Funny comment tho.

    18. I want to be the Hillshire cat where all you can see is my sausage.

    19. I can see it now…

“you’re standing in a open field rife with poppies and the sound of buzzing honeybees. Oscar stands before you, grinning a devilish grin. What do you want to do?”

      observe oscars sausage.

      “It’s oscar’s sausage”

      Take oscars sausage.

      “You can’t do that here.”

      Why not?

      “You’re in a Red State.”

Admit guilt for wanting to take oscars sausage.

      “syntax error”

    20. with dialogue like that how could it not be a great game?
