Download to Own Video, or a load of Shit

Posted on Friday, March 24, 2006 in Empty Set

It looks like the major studios are getting wise to the idea that it is very convienient to download videos off the internet and store them on your hard disk.  Sadly the convienience kind of goes away when it costs 35USD and takes an hour to download.  It doesn’t really make much sense when it takes 15 minutes to download them for free off the usenet…  But honestly why would it cost 35USD, for something I can buy on a DVD for 15USD and I don’t have to find a place to store it.

  1. One would also have to imagine that without having to pay for manufacturing and shipping and paying the stores their markup downloading would be cheaper.

  2. I vote that it is a load of shit. I suspect they are going to promote an exhorbitantly high fee so they can REALLY charge $10-15 bucks a movie when the service goes “live.”

It would cost nothing to manufacture DVDs and several million users could download the same movie file over and over.

    It’s prostitution really…without the STDs.

  3. Isn’t the problem that the RIAA is having is that no one wants to pay for the music now? What makes any media company think people are willing to pay for movies any more than they are music?

My proposal would be to pay to watch movies online. For $3 a pop (assuming a fast internet connection), I’d pay to watch a movie online.
