Black Friday Insider Information

Posted on Monday, November 14, 2005 in Ask EightAndFive, Money

So what I am saying is this: I ain’t much for shopping. I hate going to the grocery store. When I am browsing for stuff I don’t need, I like it to be in an exotic location: Hawaii, Mexico, etc.

However, let’s say you really feel like doing some day after Thanksgiving POWER SHOPPING!! What do you do? Well, you could get in line with the rest of the lemmings and blindly wait outside your favorite big-box retailer. Perhaps ordering stuff online suits your style…but if you want to target very specific items and hone in on them like a giant laser-beam from the moon, you will head on over to dealcatcher.com and plan your shopping accordingly. The forum poster alleges that he has listed all the sales to start immediately on the day after Thanksgiving. Cross-reference the ads with your shopping day using something like Google Local to map out the geographic distances between your targeted shopping sites.

Now of course this is probably just the latest internet rumor buzzing about – but if you find something on the list that is interesting it might actually be worth your time to show up and participate in the madness.

I don’t know how the forum poster could have possibly gotten insider information on all the Black Friday ads, but I do know that at my company we plan our sales and ads several weeks out…so someone from inside the companies listed over at Dealcatcher.com could have leaked information.

  1. I work at Best Buy and we have some killer deals, but we (the employees, including management) still have not seen our ads… untill today, as you were writing this article an employee of mine pointed out a similar website to dealcatcher and after a bit of research we’ve become convinced that the product discounts are accurate. And in my opinion, there are a couple of great deals on some items that are acutally worth buying… the catch is that you need to be in line by 4:30 am at most best buys and even 3am at a select few busy stores. So bring blankets and lots of cocoa if you live in the northerly states ’cause the day after thanksgiving is darn cold.

  2. Wcco.com ran an article about this (we scooped them, yay!) and said the reason retailers do not like it, is because customers go to the store before the sale starts, buy the product, then return the product after the sale starts and rebuy it…thus guaranteeing that they get the best of both the product AND the price!
